HVAC repair is a very expensive undertaking, even with the most honest contractor. Unfortunately, some contractors take advantage of the fact that most homeowners go into repair knowing this, and inflate their prices even higher. There are a number of scams these contractors try to get more money out of their customers, and these should be avoided at all costs. If any contractor attempts any of the below scams, it’s time to find another one.
They Don’t Provide Parts that Were Replaced
You should always ask to keep any part that was replaced. Even if you end up throwing it out as soon as it’s gone, you can at least inspect it and see that something was replaced. If any contractor says they can’t do this, it’s time to find another one.
They Offer Free Tune Ups
HVAC contractors should offer free estimates. They should not offer free tune-ups. Simply put, HVAC systems don’t need to be tuned up, unless something breaks, in which case they need a repair. While the “tune up” might be free, contractors sometimes offer this so they can sell you services in the future that you don’t need. If a contractor offers one, they may not be dishonest, but you should also never take them up on their offer.
They Want All Money Upfront
Contractors should be willing to let you keep one-third of the total payment until the job is complete. This is a good faith gesture and shows that they are willing to give you some kind of on-site guarantee.
They Tell You A Total Overhaul is Necessary
Some HVAC companies use their repair team as salespeople to sell new units. You may need a completely new and updated system, but you may not. Of course, contractors may tell you that you need a new system just to make more money. If a complete overhaul is recommended, get a second opinion. Also, think about when the system was originally installed, and how it’s performed over the years. If it’s fairly new and you haven’t had any problems with it until now, there’s a good chance you don’t really need a new one.
